Your porch or some call it patio often has doors that can give you direct access inside your home. Whether yours are solid or glazed (with windows), choosing how this door operates and looks are important. Glazed doors are a great way to let in light, and to have a visual connection with the outdoors.  Your lifestyle and decorative style of your space can vary your door glazing. Read on to see how to choose the right glazed door for your porch.

  • Function of your space: Depending on where your porch leads to can have a strong determining factor of what type of door to choose. For example a porch that leads off a master bedroom may look beautiful with French doors with paned windows. While a door off of a basement space may only require a half window glazed door. Choose the amount of glass desired by the function your space is serving. Basement spaces can be more utilitarian while a master bedroom is more for aesthetics.

  • Safety glazed doors: If you desire full glass sliding doors to access your porch, safety tempered glass should be used. Tempered glass if broken will break into tiny pieces as opposed to shards of glass that could hurt someone. Depending on your locality, if you’re a pool owner a slider glass door is required to have a child safety pin lock on it.  This is usually a hole in the door frame with a pin that is inserted by an adult. This avoids children accidentally getting into pool areas unattended.  Ensure you choose to have glass doors near a pool that is safe and secure.
  • Window wall doors: Access to your porch can also be achieved through window wall doors which open up to the outdoors. Window wall doors are similar to pocket doors but they slide in a track that allows individual glass wall panels to slide to one area and leaves a breathtaking wall of openness. Many luxury homes use these to join an adjacent outdoor room, lanai, and indoor living space together to create one large space when needed.

  • Large single pane: Special order glazed doors can house one single pane of glass that will act as one giant door. Used in modern architecture and interiors, these doors usually span from ceiling to floor and give uninterrupted views of the outdoors. For ideas of what type of door will fit your décor style, visit glazing door manufacturers online for galleries and ideas.
  • Choose doors by your location: Porch doors should be appropriate to the climate and geography in which your home is located. Large spans of glass may not be appropriate in a hurricane prone island home and double pane insulated doors should be used in a mountain home retreat.  Be mindful of your location when choosing, but most areas have an array of doors that will fit most homes!

colorful apartment Freshome02 Colorful Apartment Exploding With Energy and Good Taste in Barcelona
We ran across this lovely 105 square meter apartment in Barcelona that draws attention due to a vivid design and an original house plan. Designed by Miel Arquitectos, this crib inspires joyfulness and energy. The house is organized around a diagonal axis and on both sides, the rooms follow one another creating triangular shapes that ensure originality. It is interesting how the designer chose to go with an abundance of color while leaving the walls white. This way, the contrast is absolutely charming and the rooms are not overcrowded. There are plenty of details that you may find inspiring about this crib, starting with the creative staircase, the spiral shelving unit on the wall or the “liquid” hanger near the main entrance door. We also like where the stairs lead- a small, creative space that each can use in their own way (perhaps a reading corner could be well integrated here). Enjoy! [Photography: Nuria Vila]

Cat Lift Throw Your Cat Out of The Room The Elegant Way: Cat Lift [Video]
There comes a time in every cat-owner’s life when the fluffy purring felines are simply just too much to handle. This is probably why a young designer came up with the ingenious “cat lift”, a device that allows you to throw your pet out the stylish way. According to the cat lift developer, the installation can be fully “managed” and operated by the cat, as the feline is able to get in and get out on its own (when it reaches its destination), the rest of the mechanism being automatic. How much money does it take to build such a cat-teleporting machine? As stated by Gadget Review, around 800 Euros. Crazy Freshome cat-lovers everywhere- useful or way off? [ Be sure to take a look at the video below in order to see this crazy device in action ]

modern residence Freshome023 Contemporary Five Level Home in South Africa: The Nettleton 195 House
The Nettleton 195 house is a combined architecture effort between SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects and Antoni Associates and is located in Cape Town, South Africa. The residence has five levels and was built on an inclined site. Here is more on the structure of the project from the architects: “One accesses the house at the midlevel between the second and the highest floor, resulting in the house being only 2 storeys above Nettleton Road. A dramatic open tread staircase and lift core, with a generous skylight creates a central spine which connects all the floors comfortably. Even the lowest level – which is a predominantly double volume gallery space formed by the cavernous space below the main living level and the steep natural ground line – has generous natural light via the stairwell and skylights. This floor accommodates a cellar, large wall surfaces for the client's art collection, pool table, bar and open media room.  The next half level accommodates the staff quarters and plant room. As noted above, the second floor accommodates the main living rooms, which enjoy fantastic views, and connection to portions of gardens to the East and North. The third and fourth floor accommodates four West facing en-suite bedrooms, a triple garage, a study and the entrance hall at street level. Views and a unique set of finishes enrich the otherwise compact size of most rooms”. How would y0u describe the atmosphere inspired by this contemporary home?

meeting bowls nyc mmmm 04 Street Furniture for Spontaneous Interactions: Meeting Bowls in Times Square, NYC
Meeting Bowls is a new urban furniture installation recently displayed by Madrid-based mmmm… in partnership with the Times Square Alliance. According to PSFK, it is an innovative project aimed at encouraging spontaneous dialogs between random people visiting Times Square in New York. Here is more from the developers: “Meeting Bowls are large objects shaped like bowls with seating to accommodate eight people. The inviting semi-spherical capsules are installed outdoors in spaces with high pedestrian traffic. They are designed to promote interaction by having those seated inside face one another. These “social” benches are more intimate than typical public benches. The Meeting Bowls are designed to generate a slight rocking motion as they rebalance when people step into and out of them. The gentle motion generated is intended to be relaxing and fun much like a swing but one for adults“. Do you believe this idea could be implemented at a larger scale?
